Texas Nationalist Movement

StatementJanuary 31, 2020

Brexit Today. Texit Next.

On the day the United Kingdom left the European Union, the Texas Nationalist Movement marked Brexit as proof of concept for a Texas independence vote.

NEDERLAND, Texas

Today is Brexit Day, and its meaning for Texas should not be understated. For the Texas Nationalist Movement, support for Brexit was always more than support for the right of self-determination. It was a proof of concept, an answer to the question we have been asked since our founding: can TEXIT happen?

At every turn the naysayers were wrong. They said there would never be a referendum, and Britain held one. They said the vote would be lost, and the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave. They said Brexit and Texit were too different to compare, even as Westminster fought to deny the result, exactly as Washington and its apologists in Texas would. Their mantra was always the same: it will never happen. Today it is happening.

The arguments the United Kingdom had against the union centered in Brussels were milder than the arguments Texas has against the union centered in Washington. We have less sovereignty. We sit beneath a far greater weight of unelected bureaucrats. We send far more of our money into the federal system and receive far less in return. We have less voice in the policies that govern our daily lives.

Texans, our time is coming. We can have a vote on independence. We can win a vote on independence. We can stand as a nation among nations. Our congratulations go to those in the United Kingdom who championed self-government. We intend, one day, to fulfill the words of Sam Houston, that Texas would again lift its head and stand among the nations.
